Kokoda Apartments, Maroubra
The proposed buildings have been arranged on site to maximise the units’ northerly aspect; provide 100% cross ventilation; and engage with and enliven the neighbouring park. Fundamental to the arrangement of the built forms is the creation of an internal courtyard protected from Goodwood St, which allows light and breezes to filter through adjacent apartments, while simultaneously reducing the width of the adjacent buildings. This internal courtyard provides a visual and accessible link to Kokoda Park, as well as a landscaped backdrop for residents looking out from the neighbouring buildings. The courtyard additionally provides sheltered break-out space for the corner retail unit, envisaged as a cafe, allowing the space to become active during the day, while transitioning into secured quiet space at night.
