Waranara Early Learning Centre

Green Square is a rapidly changing, high density, inner city area close to Sydney’s CBD, and is experiencing an influx of young families. With this project we set out to breathe new life into an existing structure, while retaining its integrity and providing an 84 place early learning centre.

Created with the point of view of small users in mind, our nuanced adaptive reuse of an existing 1930’s disused heritage-listed hospital outpatients’ building places the imaginations of its young clients’ needs, together with heritage and sustainability factors, at the core of design.

Designed as an extension of the inside spaces, the permeable verandah space connects seamlessly to the new central playspace, incorporating sensory paths that encourage interaction and connection. Reconfigured roof cowls allow beautiful light into playrooms, accentuating textures of timber panelling and ply, with playful raised veggie gardens, outdoor kitchens and digging patches.

The contemporary wing housing the entry, playspace and wraparound verandah grafted onto the original shell was complimented by a range of reuse and sustainability measures, including passive solar and ventilation design through orientation, reuse of demolished brickwork in recycled paving, hydronic floor heating, a heat-recovery air conditioning system, an 8kw solar array system, rainwater collection tanks and bicycle storage.

“This stunning new community facility in the heart of the Green Square town centre will provide 84 much-needed places for children aged from six weeks to six years, and is less than a 10 minute walk from the train station and soon-to-be-completed library and plaza” – Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
