Solis

At the beachside suburb of Little Bay in Sydney’s south, we conceived the 45 apartment complex, SOLIS, as a new kind of seaside apartment living, offering a more sophisticated, high quality urban complex by the sea.

Part of the wider Little Bay community, SOLIS sits on 13.6 hectares of rare oceanfront land – exposed to a naturally spectacular, yet unforgiving rugged coastline. The challenge was to design seaside apartments that moved against the traditional ‘summer holiday’ mindset – characterised by cheap materials, ill-considered layouts and poor thermal control.

Elegant, durable, external cladding and wall finishes create shell-like facades of metal cladding, concrete and steel – providing shelter from the prevailing winds and harsh elemental conditions. Finely crafted internal spaces of natural Australian, timber floors and joinery open to views of Botany Bay to the west, and the vast Pacific Ocean to the east.

Standing apart from its neighbours, the sleek sculptural forms and urban materials of SOLIS carve out a modern way of living by the sea. The orientation and linear proportions of the design allow passive heating and cooling, direct northerly solar access year-round and duel aspect for 100% of the apartments.

“A key driver for the design was our desire to reduce environmental impact through energy and water reduction, minimising waste, stormwater and rainwater management and promoting biodiversity” – Conrad Johnston.
