Balmoral House 1

Located in the Mosman Village, Balmoral House 1 encompasses the Balmoral beach lifestyle, with sweeping platforms responding to the natural rhythms and topography of the narrow residential site.

A well-designed family home provides consideration to both communal and breakaway living spaces, ensuring ample space to gather and connect, as well as to retreat and unwind. Maximising privacy from the street was our primary concern, as was the optimisation of abundant natural light and breezes along the narrow, east-facing block.

Zinc panelling presented a bold feature statement to the main street, tucking the family home away into a private space behind. Responding to the need for multiple breakaway spaces, multi-levelled platforms with retractable walls provide privacy and sun control for lower level bedrooms, leading onto private timber decks with direct pool access.

Emphasis on linear forms and elongated boundaries resulted in the creation of gentle spaces. Abundance of light and cross-ventilation, created through open transitional spaces and courtyards, resulted in gentle rhythms throughout the house and its holistic design. Detailed finishes through natural materials and colour palettes celebrate the surrounding natural elements.

“The home fronts Muston Street, so we wanted it to greet the street but then turn its back a bit, so you have all your private spaces orientated to the north-east, towards the surrounding harbour views” – Emili Fox.
