The brief was to rework an existing dilapidated 1950s beach house into a light filled home for a growing family. The 'feel' of the beach house was to be retained – straightforward, unpretentious and modest – yet allowing a greater connection to the garden and outdoor spaces and opening up to views, light and aspect. A bedroom and bathroom wing was attached to the rear, with a new kitchen, dining and living area inserted into the existing shell, opening onto a north-east facing deck. Private and communal living quarters were clearly delineated using items of joinery, and flexible panels. Internal and external walls were designed with versatility, allowing cross breezes as required.
