Our practice

Informed by the Australian landscape, our projects feature integrated sustainability measures to optimise the natural resources of water, wind and sunlight. Natural rhythms and topography are considered through all project concepts, as is the environmental context of each site, and the community beyond its parameters. We design bold, tactile, robust spaces – unique in their durable materials and light-filled permeability.

The team

Emili Fox – Director

BSc(Arch) BArch (Syd), AIA BOA Chapter Councillor 2012-2014, Nominated Architect No. 6737

Known for her fierce commitment to inspired, high-quality design, Co-Director, Emili Fox, relishes the challenge of delivering considered, refined projects with an added element of surprise.

“We aim to always go beyond the brief and give our clients more than they expect.” Emili Fox

Passionate about social and environmental sustainability, Emili’s commitment to applying innovative solutions to site and brief has resulted in a mindful approach to design – maximising the natural elements to reduce the environmental impact of each project.

Solutions-driven and efficient, Emili’s respect for the design process contributes to Fox Johnston’s track record of delivering projects that push the boundaries of design possibilities.

Inspired by thoughtful design with cohesive narrative elements, Emili and Conrad’s complimentary approach to the design process was a driving factor for their initial partnership, one that has strengthened their individual capabilities to achieve international success.

With a strong aesthetic and intuitive design philosophy, Emili and Conrad’s willingness to embrace the big ideas has resulted in international recognition for narrative-driven concepts that are rich in meaning and evocative of place.

Conrad Johnston – Director

Director. B.Sc(Arch), BArch(Hon)(USYD), AIA, BOA

As one of two founding Directors, Conrad Johnston’s reputation for achieving high quality design outcomes has been integral to the success of Fox Johnston, named one of the top “20 young practices in the world” (Wallpaper Magazine, 2013).

With a depth of experience ranging from concept design, regulatory approval and then project delivery, Johnston brings a bold, finely honed design aesthetic to the studio, delivering meaningful, tactile projects that reach for a singular vision, aligning all the elements into a cohesive whole.

Developed through his pursuit of the exceptional, Conrad’s leading site-specific design responses are underpinned by the people and story behind the concept, a design philosophy that aligns closely with Co-Director Emili’s approach, and one that is often rewarded with international recognition.

Inspired by architects with an unorthodox approach to conceptual design, Conrad Johnston works closely with Emili Fox to realise ambitious projects that ultimately reach for the purposeful and practical in equal measures.

“Our objective is to give our client a robust, integrated and superbly resolved solution that meets their brief, but also offers something they haven’t wholly expected.” Conrad Johnston
